The real planet of the apes belongs to Liberia- Monkey Island.
Monkey Island is located 40 miles outside of Monrovia in Marshall Liberia just off the coast of the Atlantic ocean. Now home to 60 chimpanzees previously used for hepetitis research
In 1974, the New York Blood Center opened up a research center for vaccinations. The research center was abandoned in 2005 leaving many of the chimps who solely relied on human support. Now a group of Liberian volunteers boat to the island every other day to feed the chimpanzees as their current lifeline.
